The struggle against a divided race
Welcome
Welcome to the official fan page of the Canadian best-selling novel- Indian Horse!
Being an aboriginal person in the 1960s in Canada was rough, especially for the children. Many Native American children were sent off to residential schools and forced to ignore their own beliefs and culture and instead worship the religion of Christianity. The purpose of these schools was to "adapt kids to a rapidly modernizing society" by ordering them to speak English or French rather than their native tongue or practicing their culture whatsoever. If any child disagreed or neglected these orders, they received severe punishment including physical and emotional abuse. Richard Wagamese tells the story of Saul Indian Horse and his life living as a residential student and how he became one the best ice hockey players in the country.
